Our Basic Text is a 60-minute Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting where attendees read aloud and discusses the book Alcoholics Anonymous, referred to by most in 12-Step recovery as the Big Book because it was originally published in 1939 on thick paper and thus appeared to be a big book. AA is a fellowship of people who share their experience, strength, and hope with each other so that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The Big Book forms the basis for most 12-Step recovery programs and is referred to in the preface as “the basic text of our society.” At this meeting, sections of the Big Book are read aloud and discussed by those in attendance. All are welcome regardless of the nature or extent of their addiction or recovery. There is no cost to attend, although all AA meetings ask for voluntary donations to support the meeting.
