The Sunshine Meeting is a 60-minute Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) discussion meeting held Tuesday mornings at the Fellowship Centre. The chairperson of the meeting selects topics to facilitate discussion. Topics are typically focussed on self-improvement because happy people are more likely to recover from addiction than those who continue to wallow in misery and self-pity. The following is read aloud at the beginning of almost all AA meetings because it summarizes the nature and purpose of such meetings:
Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are self- supporting through our own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
All are welcome regardless of the nature or extent of their addiction or recovery. There is no cost to attend, although all AA meetings ask for voluntary donations to support the meeting.
